Froggo’s story

Froggo was born by a slow stream, in the part where the reeds grow thick enough to lean on.

He was small. Smaller than the others, and he stayed small longer than seemed fair. He could not clear the wide part of the stream, and he could not reach the high leaves.

Then came a day of long rain. The big frogs went under the big leaf, and they filled it, and there was no room left for anyone small.

So Froggo sat in the rain and looked at three sticks. He pushed the first into the mud, leaned the second against it, laid a broad leaf across the top — and the rain fell on the leaf instead of on Froggo.

It leaked. He built it again. It leaked less. He built it again.

Now when the long rain comes, the big frogs leave the big leaf and come to sit under Froggo’s roof, because it does not leak, and because there is always room.

Froggo learned early what some never learn at all: a thing you make yourself fits you better than a thing you find.
